Sea Foam for sticking chain tensioner or cam phaser [SOLVED]
Asked by Bill K. In Texas
I have a 2012 Cadillac CTS with a 3.0 V6 with 94k miles. At cold start, you can hear a rattle for about a second coming from the timing chains. I speculate the cause is a sticking chain tensioner or cam phaser(s). Can Sea Foam Motor Treatment help with this? If so, when do I add it and do I need to at each oil change?
Here’s what I’d do: while Sea Foam Motor Treatment or Sea Foam High Mileage can be added to engine oil at any time between oil change intervals, we recommend adding Sea Foam to an engine oil crankcase 100 to 300 drive miles before changing oil and filter. Do not exceed one treatment per oil change interval.
Use 1 ounce of Sea Foam Motor Treatment or High Mileage per quart of engine oil. Drive normally for 100-300 miles and perform an engine oil and filter change as you normally would.
As far as continued use, after a couple oil treatments with Sea Foam the problem should remedy itself. You can add Sea Foam to your engine oil as often as once per oil change. I recommend using Sea Foam in your engine oil at least once per year or 12,000 miles.

I’m having the same issue with my 2014 Volkswagen Beetle R. Dealer wants to do a complete top engine breakdown to check the tensioners and is already hinting to a new engine. I’m like WTF? My engine has 100k mile and runs perfect other than the small misfire like hesitation at low RPM when cold. After warmup, runs like a dream so why a 7k job recommendation? I’m trying the Sea Foam idea to free up any sticking timing hydraulic tensioner.
